Kevin Miles
Kevin Miles passed on September 9, 2017, though it feels like yesterday. Kevin fought hard to battle his addiction. He received the help he needed and worked the program but unfortunately, after being 9 months sober, he relapsed and passed away.
Some of us have known Miles for nearly 40 years. He had the biggest heart growing up in the neighborhood and he wore his emotions on his sleeve. Throughout his life, he always fit the role of the protector. To those close to him, he provided a place of safety and neutrality.
Miles always treated his friends like family. He stuck by these friends when their lives were a mess and he never judged us. He would have stopped a moving train to protect us and due to his size, he probably could have done so. No matter how far away, if one of his lifelong friends were in trouble or needed a conversation or a laugh, he’d oblige.
He was also the friend who would confide in you when he needed guidance. He was as loyal as one could get to his closest friends. If he could help in any way, he would. He never spoke of all the good deeds he accomplished, and many of us heard of these selfless acts only after he had passed. This was a true sign of his integrity and how much he honored protecting one’s privacy.
He had the heart of a lion, the brain of a genius, and the demeanor of a seasoned comedian. He was also one of the best athletes we’ve ever known. He had the opportunity to be whatever he wanted to be. He chose to be a humble friend and a loving son to his mother, sister, and other family members. This was the same mother that gave him the wit he so mastered. His family and friends have always appreciated Kevin’s unwavering selflessness and his ability to make anyone laugh; his sense of humor was unparalleled.
Miles didn’t die in vain. Quite the contrary. He left behind the legacy of a circle of friends that will never lose touch. Friends that are bonded for life. Friends that will always check in on each other and be there when they need each other the most. Friends that will see the signs if one of them is hurting and needs the help only a close friend can provide. Friends that will protect each other, much like he did for us.
Miles will never be forgotten and I imagine we will still be telling stories of Miles’ humor and unwavering friendship for as long as we live. We will certainly never forget him and we will always love him. Because we know how much he always loved us.
